Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, also known as DJ Maphorisa, is a 35-year-old South African performer, songwriter, disc jockey, record producer, and musical artist.


The multi-talented record producer has created a global brand by producing both local and international talents.

DJ Maphorisa has featured worldwide and South African stars such as Wizkid, Kabza De Small, Nicki Minaj, Black Coffee, C4 Pedro, and many more.

DJ Maphorisa, whose true name is Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, was born on November 15, 1987, in Pretoria.

Sepedi is his native tongue. DJ Maphorisa was born in Nigeria, although his mother is from South Africa.

He was born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa, where his career has taken off.


DJ Maphorisa, the internationally renowned disc jockey, grew up in a musical family. His mother was a member of a music-related church, which fueled his interest in the field.

While he was still a rising star, he joined Uhuru, a musically interested group of like-minded individuals. While still a member of the group, he released his first official single, which was well-received.

In 2013, he was featured in a hit song that also featured Mafikizolo. Mafikizolo’s smash single Khona was co-produced by DJ Maphorisa.

The Mafikizolo group recorded a song titled The Sound that featured international sensation Davido. Y-Tjukutja was another smash for them.

DJ Maphorisa formed Blaqboy Music, which signed Sha Sha, Myztro Musiq, Lucas Raps, Ma Whoo, Tyler ICU, Mas Musiq, Zingah, Mlindo the Vocalist, Bontle Smith, Daliwonga, and more brilliant artists.

After leaving Kalawa Jazmee Records, he created Blaqboy Music.

DJ Maphorisa has collaborated with Niniola, Oskido, Kwesta, Professor, Deejay Buckz, and many more.

A role he played in the popular Wizkid’s One Dance, which featured Kayla, earned him international recognition.
